Those applying for graduate school must have a valid English test score (TOEFL-iBT, TOEFL-PBT, TOEIC) taken within the last two years. Every year, some students are unable to apply due to late submission. We strongly recommend taking the English test early.

If you are considering applying to the doctoral program, please contact Prof. Ohue before applying. Your past research (e.g., publications) will be reviewed. Refer to the Graduate School Admissions Guide for details.

Doctoral students may also be eligible for the following internal funding programs:

We also support applications for the JSPS Research Fellow DC1/DC2. Please consult us if you are interested.

Working Professionals in the Doctoral Program

Science Tokyo allows working professionals (e.g., those affiliated with companies) to enter the doctoral program. Although there is no separate “Professional Doctorate” curriculum, the standard program is designed with flexibility for such cases (including courses like recurrent education training). Please consult with us about balancing work and research. Ohue Lab has previously accepted one working doctoral student, who completed the program in 3 years and 6 months and earned their Ph.D.

Research Supervision for External Students

It is possible to conduct research at our lab under delegated supervision while being enrolled at another school or university, provided both institutions agree. Please contact us via email if you are interested.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. Do I need to study biology before joining?
    A. No. You’ll study through reading after joining. If interested, we recommend “Introduction to Bioinformatics” by the Japanese Society for Bioinformatics (in Japanese).
  • Q. How are research topics decided?
    A. They are decided with faculty based on your background and strengths. For example, if you’re good at competitive programming, you might work on algorithm design.
  • Q. How often are seminars held?
    A. Typically 3–4 times a week (research presentations, journal club, textbook study). There are also monthly lab-wide meetings and occasional research meetings.
  • Q. Are there core hours for being in the lab?
    A. No core hours. But seminar attendance is mandatory.
  • Q. Is remote work allowed?
    A. Regular seminars are held in person. Research meetings and individual research may be conducted online, but lab presence is encouraged.
  • Q. What type of students fit best in Ohue Lab?
    A. Those who want to build a track record through presentations and pursue research in a free and active environment. We value proactive research dissemination.
  • Q. How does Ohue Lab differ from Akiyama, Ishida, or Sekijima Labs?
    A. While all cover similar fields, Ohue Lab focuses on protein-protein interactions (PPI) and computational methods in biology, chemistry, and drug discovery.
  • Q. What kind of companies do students typically join after graduation?
    A. Many join IT companies, but we also have placements in major pharmaceutical firms. We hold job info sessions in the lab.

Past employers include: Accenture, Acroquest Technology, AGC, NTT Data, Soliton Systems, NEC, Nomura Research Institute, Fujitsu, FUJIFILM

Staff Recruitment

JSPS Research Fellow (PD, RPD)

Ohue accepts JSPS Research Fellow PD/RPD. We provide an environment where researchers can focus freely on bioinformatics or in silico drug discovery. If you’re interested, please contact us in advance. We support proposal planning and application writing.

Postdocs, Technical Staff, and Administrative Staff

Open positions are listed on our website. Even if no public calls are open, we may still accept research staff. Please contact us if you are interested in joining Ohue Lab.

Other Information

For those interested in applying for a research‑student position at the School of Computing, Institute of Science Tokyo

Thank you for your interest in the Institute of Science Tokyo and the Ohue Laboratory. Except under special circumstances, we do not accept research students. Because the entrance examination is highly competitive, it is not realistic for us to admit applicants who have not yet passed it. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Instead, we encourage you to consider options such as the MEXT Scholarship obtained through a Japanese‑embassy recommendation or the entrance examination for the International Graduate Program IGP(C) conducted by Science Tokyo. Please refer to the university’s official website for detailed admission information. If you pass any of these official examinations, we would be delighted to welcome you to our laboratory. We wish you every success in your future endeavors.
